Start Your Game in UE5 or Wait for Unreal Engine 6?

November 4, 2026

Unreal Engine 5 and the UE6 roadmap. Updated November 2026.

Short answer: if you want to ship before 2029, start in UE5. UE6 Early Access is planned for the end of 2027 and the full release 12–18 months after that. Early Access is a preview, and few teams ship a commercial game on one. If you want to be ready for UE6 or your game lives in Fortnite, learn Verse in UEFN alongside. Don’t sit and wait. Nothing about waiting makes your game better.

The timeline that matters

WhenWhatCan you ship on it?
NowUE 5.8, Blueprints and C++Yes
Next weekUE 5.9 PreviewPreview only. Wait for the full 5.9 release
End of 2027 (planned)UE6 Early Access, Verse and Scene Graph onlyRisky. It’s a preview
Late 2028 to mid 2029 (estimate)UE6 full release, 12–18 months after Early AccessYes, once your plugins and tools support it

The UE6 dates come from Epic’s June roadmap and could move. Engine dates often do.

Pick by when you want to ship

Shipping within two years: UE5, no question. You’ll use tools that work today, tutorials that match, and plugins that support your engine version.

A long project, shipping 2029 or later: still start in UE5, because UE6 doesn’t exist yet. Build your prototype, prove the game is fun, and keep the project clean so it can be converted later. Learn Verse on the side so you can decide with real knowledge when Early Access arrives.

You want to publish in Fortnite: start in UEFN now. You’re already using Verse and Scene Graph, which UE6 is built on. Epic has paid out over $1 billion to UEFN developers.

You’re learning game development: either works. Blueprints in UE5 teach you the engine fastest today. Verse in UEFN teaches you the language that UE6 will use. Many people will do both.

Why waiting is the worst choice

  • A year spent waiting is a year without a finished game, a portfolio or player feedback.
  • Your design, art, sound, levels and game feel move to any engine. Only the gameplay code needs converting.
  • Early Access is a preview. The first months will bring missing features, changing APIs and few tutorials.

Epic plans AI-assisted tools to convert Blueprint and C++ gameplay code to Verse. Their format isn’t decided yet, so don’t count on a one-click move. Plan for some manual work.

FAQ

Will UE5 get updates after 5.9? Epic hasn’t promised more. You can keep shipping on any UE5 version you like.

Is UEFN a real way to make money? For some developers, yes. You earn from engagement and in-island purchases, but you build inside Fortnite’s rules and audience.

Can I mix UE5 and UEFN? Many developers do. Epic highlighted a UEFN team that went on to ship a standalone UE5 game.
