Updated October 2026. Written by the Algosyntax team. We sell our Unreal plugins on our own store and on Fab.
Quick answer:
- Start on Fab. It’s where Unreal developers already shop, it’s built into the Epic launcher, and creators keep 88% of each sale.
- Add your own store once you have a few products and some followers. You keep more per sale and own the customer relationship, but you do the work Fab does for you.
- itch.io and Gumroad are useful extras, especially for free tools and to reach people outside the Unreal marketplace. They rarely replace Fab for Unreal-specific products.
Most successful sellers use more than one.
Fab
Epic’s official marketplace for Unreal Engine (and other) content.
Pros
- Buyers are already there and already use Unreal.
- Products show up inside the Epic Games Launcher.
- Creators keep 88%; Epic handles payments and delivery.
Cons
- Lots of competition, so new products can get buried.
- You follow Fab’s submission rules and review process. Code plugins, for example, must meet its technical requirements.
- You don’t get your buyers’ contact details, so it’s hard to tell them about updates or new products.
Your own store
A store on your own website, for example WordPress with a digital downloads plugin.
Pros
- You keep the most per sale (minus payment processing fees).
- You own your customer list: you can email buyers about updates, upgrades and sales.
- You control pricing, bundles, upgrade discounts and how your product pages look.
- Your product pages can rank on Google and bring their own traffic.
Cons
- No built-in audience: you have to bring every visitor yourself.
- You handle hosting, payment setup, delivery, licence keys and support.
- Taxes such as VAT may become your responsibility, depending on where your customers are and how your payment provider works.
itch.io
Popular with indie game developers.
Pros
- Easy to set up. You choose how much itch.io keeps (the default is 10%).
- Great for free tools, demos and “pay what you want” releases that build a following.
Cons
- Fewer buyers looking specifically for Unreal Engine plugins.
- Less suited to professional licence tiers for studios.
Gumroad
A general-purpose platform for selling digital products.
Pros
- Very quick to start selling, with simple product pages and email updates to buyers.
- Good for one-off tools and side products.
Cons
- Fees are higher than Fab or your own store, so check Gumroad’s current fee page.
- Few people browse Gumroad looking for Unreal content, so you bring the traffic.
Which should you choose?
| Your situation | Good choice |
|---|---|
| First plugin or asset, no audience yet | Fab |
| A few products and growing followers | Fab plus your own store |
| Free tool to build an audience | itch.io or your own site, plus Fab if it fits |
| Want to email past buyers about updates | Your own store (or Gumroad) |
| Studio licences and bundles | Your own store, with Fab for discovery |
Tips whichever you choose
- Keep the full description, docs and changelog in one place you control (your own site), and link to it from every store listing.
- Use the same product name everywhere so buyers searching for it find you.
- Keep versions up to date on every store. An old version on one store makes the whole product look abandoned.
- Offer a way to upgrade for buyers who bought an older version elsewhere.
FAQ
Can I sell the same plugin on Fab and my own store?
Generally yes, as long as you follow each store’s terms. Check Fab’s current seller agreement for any exclusivity or pricing rules.
How much does Fab take?
Creators receive 88% of each sale and Epic keeps 12%.
Do I need my own website at all?
Not to start. But a simple site with your products, docs and an email signup gives you something no marketplace can take away.
